What this study looked at
The team used US electronic health records for 2,560,035 children with linked birth-parent data. They followed children to age eight and compared the timing of a first MMR dose with later autism diagnoses.
Their main analysis focused on a first dose given between 11.5 and 24 months. After accounting for several factors that can muddy this kind of question, the estimate stayed close to one: no sign of an increased likelihood of autism.
Why the timing question can feel so confusing
Autistic traits are often noticed around the same broad period when young children receive routine vaccines. Two things happening around the same time can feel connected. That timing alone does not show that one caused the other.
The researchers used age-based comparisons and a second, unrelated routine vaccine as a check. That check was also close to no difference. It does not make any one study perfect, but it is a useful way to look for a common source of bias.
What it does — and does not — settle
This study supports a clear conclusion about its question: it found no association between a first MMR dose before age two and childhood autism. It does not suggest that autism needs preventing or fixing. Autistic children deserve good healthcare, safety and respect.
It is still an observational study based on recorded information, not a randomised trial. It cannot answer every personal question about vaccines, a child’s health history or a schedule. Those questions belong in a conversation with a qualified clinician who knows the child.
